What MetaTrader 4 is

MetaTrader 4 is a trading platform developed by MetaQuotes, a software company that licenses it to brokers and trading firms rather than offering trading accounts itself. It was built mainly for forex and CFD trading and is available as a Windows desktop application, a web terminal and mobile apps for iOS and Android.

It covers the essentials: standard chart timeframes, a set of built-in indicators, one-click trading, pending orders, and stop loss and take profit levels on every position. Its main draw for many traders is automation. Expert Advisors and custom indicators are written in the MQL4 language, and a large library of existing tools has built up around the platform over the years.

MetaQuotes has moved most of its development to MetaTrader 5, and prop firm access to its platforms depends on the developer's licensing terms, which have changed before. Availability can also depend on your country of residence. Before buying, check whether the firm allows Expert Advisors and copy trading, which server and symbol names you will use, and how the firm would handle a move to another platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Expert Advisors on a prop firm MetaTrader 4 account?

Often, but not always. Some firms allow any Expert Advisor, some only allow trade management tools, and some ban strategies such as high-frequency trading or tick scalping. Read the firm's rules on automated trading before you run one.

Is MetaTrader 4 the same at every prop firm?

The software is the same, but the trading conditions are not. Spreads, commissions, available symbols, leverage and the server time used for daily loss limits are set by the firm and its liquidity setup, so compare them firm by firm.

Should I choose MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5?

If you rely on tools written for MetaTrader 4, staying on it can make sense. For new traders, MetaTrader 5 has more timeframes and features and is where the developer focuses its work, so it is often the more future-proof choice when a firm offers both.
