How ACH payouts work

The Automated Clearing House, or ACH, is the US network banks use for domestic electronic transfers such as payroll and bill payments. For a payout, you give the firm or its payment provider your bank's routing number and your account number, and the money is credited directly to your account.

ACH payments commonly settle within one to a few business days after the firm sends them, and same-day ACH can be faster where the firm and the banks involved support it. Payments are processed in batches on business days, so weekends and US public holidays can add time.

ACH is usually low cost compared with an international wire, and because it is a domestic US dollar transfer there is no currency conversion. It is generally only available for US bank accounts. US-based firms and payment providers may ask for tax forms as part of verification, so check how payouts are treated with a qualified adviser.

Frequently asked questions

Can I receive ACH payouts outside the United States?

ACH is a US domestic network, so it generally needs a US bank account. Traders outside the US usually choose a bank wire, a local transfer or another method the firm offers.

What details do I need for an ACH payout?

You typically need your bank's routing number, your account number, the account type and the name on the account, which should match your verified identity. Double check the numbers, since errors can delay or return the payment.

Is ACH faster than a bank wire?

Not always. Domestic wires can arrive the same day, while standard ACH may take a few business days. ACH is often cheaper, so the trade-off is usually between cost and speed.
