Futures prop firms with trailing drawdown

Futures: a trailing drawdown moves the maximum loss level up as your account makes new highs, keeping it a set distance behind your peak. On the programs listed here it updates in real time, based on closed balance, equity or intraday highs, rather than once a day. That locks in part of your progress but leaves less room after a winning run.

How a trailing drawdown works

The loss level starts a set distance below your starting balance. Each time the account reaches a new high, the level rises by the same amount, and it never moves back down. What counts as a new high depends on the version: balance trailing moves only on closed trades, while equity and intraday trailing also count open profit at its highest point.

The equity-based versions are the strictest. If a trade shows a large open profit and then comes back to break even, the level has already moved up behind the peak, and your remaining room is smaller than when you entered. This catches traders who let winners run and then give back part of the move.

Many programs stop trailing once the level reaches the starting balance or a set point near it, after which it acts like a static limit. Trailing drawdown programs are sometimes priced lower than static ones. Before buying, check which version applies, where the trailing stops, and how your usual trade management, such as holding to a target or scaling out, would interact with it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between trailing and end-of-day drawdown?

A trailing drawdown updates in real time as your balance or equity makes new highs. An end-of-day drawdown updates only once a day from your closing balance, so swings during the session do not move it. End-of-day programs have their own list.

Does a trailing drawdown include open profit?

It depends on the version. Balance trailing moves only on closed trades, while equity and intraday trailing also count unrealised profit at its highest point. The program details for each firm state which one applies.

Does the trailing ever stop?

On many programs it stops once the loss level reaches the starting balance or a set amount above it, and from then on the level stays fixed. If a program keeps trailing, your room never grows beyond the original allowance.
